The Professional Bio
In addition to having 20 years of professional editing experience, I’m also a member in good standing of the Editorial Freelancers Association, the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors, and the American Copy Editors Society.
My editing specialty is nonfiction. I understand the editing nuances that go with writing a nonfiction book, like the amount of research necessary, the importance of citing sources correctly, and the delicate balancing act that goes with including an author’s story (how much to include and when).
I also enjoy speaking at workshops, conferences, or retreats for solopreneurs or creative business owners. Topics I’m available to speak on include:
• Using a Book to Scale Your Business
• Self-Publishing 101
• Determining Your Best Path to Publication
• Self-Publishing Success
You’ve found your compass to get you through the book publishing world.
For all the benefits that a book can bring to your business, planning and writing one can be a hard, lonely task. Not only do you have to actually write the book, but you also have to worry about how you’re going to publish and sell it. And Google will only get you so far.
That’s where I come in. I help creative entrepreneurs and bloggers craft stellar books no matter what stage of the writing process they’re in. Whether you have the seed of a book idea, or you have a completed manuscript ready for editing, I’m here to support you and ensure that your work spotlights your expertise.
True confession: I liked diagramming sentences in middle school English class, and I love talking grammar at cocktail parties. (It drives my husband nuts!) So if you don’t know your past perfect from your pluperfect tense, or your en-dash from your em-dash, don’t worry. I’ve got all that nitty-gritty covered, allowing you to focus on the most important thing: your book’s content.
Despite my love of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, there’s more to editing than simply watching your punctuation and grammar.
In addition to keeping a sharp eye on your dangling modifiers, I’ll build a relationship with you, the author. We work as a team to ensure your content is the best it can be. Here’s a little more about your prospective teammate:
Certified Grammar Nerd and Red Pencil Wielder
I’m a 20-year veteran of the publishing industry, and I’m bringing my knowledge of it to the online business world. My passion is helping creative business owners, bloggers, and solopreneurs speak the language of publishing, either through a traditional publisher or via self-publishing.
The rise of self-publishing enables solopreneurs and creative business owners to maintain control over their products and schedule and to keep more of their profits. However, this model is more difficult to navigate alone. I’m here to help solopreneurs make smart decisions about how to write, publish, and market their book.
Avid Bookworm and Coffee Mug... Collector
When I’m not diagramming sentences or working with clients, you can find me on the deck reading a new release my Kindle, traveling with my husband or girlfriends, volunteering in my community, or finding new ways of being the world’s #1 aunt.
Come August, I’ll be camped out at Office Depot because back to school shopping is my jam, though I’m not a student, nor do I have children. I’ve been known to spend an entire day buying Papermate Flairs and basically all things stationery/office supplies.
Fall is my favorite season. I love seeing the leaves change and feeling the promise of winter in the air. Fall is also the time when I’m most likely to break out the 5,698 (plus or minus 4) coffee mugs that I collect (OK, fine - hoard).
While sipping coffee from one of my mugs, I may watch one of my two favorite movies of all time (Big and Casablanca). I’d much rather watch one of my favorites than try a new one. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Occasionally, I’ll travel to go to family get-togethers. My mom was one of 10 kids, so I’m part of a huge Irish-Catholic family. And the Kelly genes are strong; there’s an actual resemblance among (almost) all of us!
